NLP Coaching
What is NLP?
Neuro Linguistic Programming, or NLP, is the art and science that can be described in a nutshell as ‘an attitude and a methodology that leaves behind a trail of techniques’.
The attitude of NLP is one of curiosity and experimentation. The methodology is modelling, the process of duplicating excellent behavior. Another person’s behavior can be duplicated by studying what that person does inside their head (language, filters, programs, etc.) to produce results.
Richard Bandler and John Grinder, who began modelling and duplicating the ‘magical results’ of a few top communicators and therapists, initially created NLP in 1975. Since then, many have added to the pool of NLP knowledge that exists worldwide.
How does NLP work?
Think of your mind as your internal personal computer. Your results in life come from your actions, and your actions are the product of decisions and choices you make. But what directs your choices and decisions? Why do some people make great choices while others don’t?
The answer – it’s the software you’ve installed in your personal internal computer that makes all of the difference. NLP lets you understand that software and, better still, let’s you change, adopt or eliminate behaviors, as you desire.
NLP is a how to (as opposed to what to) technology. It shows you how to achieve what you want and how to become the person you want to achieve your goals.
Why is NLP coaching so effective?
All learning, change and growth occurs at the unconscious level of our minds. NLP allows you to accelerate those changes through technology that targets the unconscious mind and is proven to create outstanding results. Combine this technology with the accountability and momentum created through a coach, and you are on your way to:
- Dramatically increased effectiveness
- Generating empowering emotional states within yourself at will
- Eliminating negative emotions and limiting decisions
- Developing a compelling future
- Creating patterns of excellence.
The coaching process
Coaching typically follows the following process, starting with you articulating your outcome and then committing to change.
Your expectations and desired outcomes will have a major impact on the results you achieve. That requires you to answer questions such as:
- What issues and outcomes do you expect coaching will help you overcome or achieve?
- What could or has stopped you from achieving or overcoming these issues in the past?
- What have those blockages cost you?
- What do you really want, in all areas of your life?
- What will you be being, doing and seeing differently as a result of the coaching?

Are you committed?
In the coaching framework, your commitment will, without doubt, determine your success. Therefore, your commitment and accountability are non-negotiable. NLP coaching is about you accessing your inherent and vast resources – it’s your journey and it can be challenging. If you are looking for a passive process that will be done to you, NLP coaching is not for you.
Getting started with some breakthroughs
The results you have achieved in life will reveal certain ways of thinking, as well as beliefs and emotions that do not serve you. The first 3-4 coaching sessions will be 2-3 hours in
length and involve:
- An analysis of your personal history
- Clearing of limiting or negative beliefs and emotions
- An introduction to empowering mindsets and behaviours
- Setting and reporting on achievable tasks and goals.
- You ought expect to experience significant breakthroughs, insight and shifts of consciousness during this process.
The rhythm of coaching
The power in coaching comes from the regular reflection on results and commitment to new action in the context of targeted areas for expansion or improvement.
The 1-2 hour sessions are generally dedicated to:
- Articulating values, vision and purpose in life
- Increasing self-awareness
- Developing strategies and skills to bring about desired changes in behaviour and attitude.
- Recognising, examining and challenging limiting beliefs
- Establishing goals that align with your values, vision and purpose.
- Creating action plans to achieve goals while dodging road blocks.
Coaching occurs on a fortnightly or monthly basis, over 3, 6 or 12 months.
