Leadership
Great leadership is about empowering and inspiring others to expand and exceed their own expectations. It’s about the impact you have on others through your thoughts, words and deeds. In that context, leadership is a journey that starts and ends with self awareness, personal development and service to the team.
Leaders who face this challenge are the magicians who ‘engage’ teams and achieve
- 70% higher productivity, and
- 40% higher profit (Asia Pacific Engagement Survey, 2008).
What’s more, they build lasting personal relationships, attract high achievers who are loyal to them, and taste more than their fair share of personal success.
Leaders who don’t follow this recipe will get patchy and/or short-term results, never fulfilling their potential nor allowing their teams to reach their potential.
Leadership that transforms – the Dare2XL model
Dare2XL Leadership Programs are structured to provide leaders with the ability to bring about real and lasting change. The leadership journey must begin with a better understanding of your beliefs, attitudes and values, as these drive your behaviour, whether you like it or not. That discovery process must occur in the context of the impact your thoughts, words and action have on yourself and others. It is from this grounding that skills and tools of leadership can have a lasting positive effect.
The Dare2XL model, which is at the core of it Leadership Programs, is as follows.
Adjust your lens of reality Great leaders realise the way they look at the world and what they focus on plays a large role in what is possible for them and their teams. Accordingly, they focus on success, what is possible, and where the opportunities are. They accept they don’t have a mortgage on being right and that the change they want to bring about must start with them.
Work out why you are there – what’s your reason for being? It’s almost impossible to spark the flame of engagement in another if you are a wet blanket. Leaders who go through the motions and haven’t aligned their reason-for-being or their ‘big why’ with their work have no hope of getting their teams excited. It’s paramount that leaders ask themselves and get answers to these bigger questions.
Start being yourself Authenticity is an extraordinary tool for building trust and encouraging commitment from other to the cause. So often leaders think they have to be someone else or behave in a particular way that does not resonate with all the positive attributes and traits that got them to where they are. The converse is true. Leadership strength lays in being who you are while understanding your impact on others.
Communicate to empower, not to show your power Communication is the tool of leadership. Great leaders are the story tellers of organisations. They use their language to reveal opportunities, to empower their teams, to reward effort and achievement. They build trust through their honesty and transparency and are rewarded with loyalty and commitment to the cause. They also ask lots of questions and genuinely listen to the answers.
Build an environment for the team to flourish in Great leaders are focused on the results they want to achieve. They also understand that they need to formally create an environment in which everyone is able to give their best. That means agreeing on what behaviour is acceptable and what values the team will live by. It also involves helping the team determine what it’s purpose is – why does it exist and why would it matter if it disappeared tomorrow?
Keeping score Accountability is essential for success. Failing to hold yourself and others to account can send a whole host of wrong messages to the team, the worst of those being you are untrustworthy. But accountability on it’s own is not enough. The first step is to ensure you are measuring the right things.
Coach and mentor Many leaders never ask their team members questions like: What do you love to do? What would you like to do more of? Where do you think you are particularly talented? What do you value the most in a job? Great leaders help their team members ask and answer these bigger questions, and then they challenge and guide them to achieve and discover their own way through questions, listening and giving advice when it’s needed.
